What is Battle of the Books?

Book Battle programs are competitions similar to jeopardy or quiz games, but questions come from a controlled list of books that participants read in preparation for the matches. Book Battle programs are a great way to get students to read. TCMS will battle each middle school in the county at the annual competition in February.

How does it work? Teams will be made up of students from grades 6-8. Team members can be from the same class or mixed classes. Our goal is to have at least 12 students on our team. Teams cannot compete with less than 6 students.  

When does the “Middle School Battle of the Books” start? In general, promotion begins in the fall, is intensified during the winter, and the battles take place in February.

How are books selected for the book list? Books are chosen by the North Carolina School Library Media Association. Considerations when selecting titles for the list include reading level, popularity, awards received, cross gender interest, promotion of excellent titles that may not be well known, titles that frequently appear on Accelerated Reader or other reading lists, and availability of in-print or paperback copies.

100 Black Men of Coastal North Carolina

For several years, the 100 Black Men of Coastal North Carolina have sponsored programs to help students, especially African American males, achieve excellence in education and beyond.

The “100 Black Men of Coastal North Carolina” is a non-profit, which consists of a group of diverse Black men dedicated to improving the quality of life of African American youth in southeastern North Carolina with a focus on young black males, while enhancing the educational, health, and economic opportunities for all African Americans.

FCA is a national non denominational Christian ministry that seeks to meet students in their schools, sports teams, and community to share about the gospel of Jesus. “FCA focuses on serving local communities around the globe by engaging, equipping and empowering coaches and athletes to unite, inspire and change the world through the gospel.” See FCA’s website for more information.

FCA is open to all students, regardless of background or belief, and is not exclusive to athletes. FCA operates from a Christian worldview. Staff and volunteers lead faith based discussions and studies, often focused around a passage of the Bible. 

FCA meets Tuesday mornings at 7:15 AM in the Band Room (412) for a brief devotion, occasional game, and snack.

Jazz band is an after school club learning and studying one of America’s great musical art forms - Jazz! Instrumental music background is necessary, and students must pass certain playing thresholds to participate. Check the TCMS Band website for up to date meeting information. 

Students will play and learn jazz and rock styles, rehearse full band pieces together, and begin learning the foundations of improvised soloing in a safe environment. The jazz band will perform at least once a year. 

Typical jazz band instruments are the saxophones, trombones, trumpets, drums, piano, guitar, bass and other percussion, but students who wish to participate can play any of their primary instruments.
